    The Culture Code

Where does great culture come from? How do you build and sustain it in your group, or strengthen a culture that needs fixing? In The Culture Code, Daniel Coyle goes inside some of the world’s most successful organizations—including the U.S. Navy’s SEAL Team Six, IDEO, and the San Antonio Spurs—and reveals what makes them tick. He demystifies the culture-building process by identifying three key skills that generate cohesion and cooperation, and explains how diverse groups learn to function with a single mind. Drawing on examples that range from Internet retailer Zappos to the comedy troupe Upright Citizens Brigade to a daring gang of jewel thieves, Coyle offers specific strategies that trigger learning, spark collaboration, build trust, and drive positive change. Coyle unearths helpful stories of failure that illustrate what not to do, troubleshoots common pitfalls, and shares advice about reforming a toxic culture. Combining leading-edge science, on-the-ground insights from world-class leaders, and practical ideas for action, The Culture Code offers a roadmap for creating an environment where innovation flourishes, problems get solved, and expectations are exceeded. Read along with us and join our discussion! Let's explore how the author's lessons apply to the multifamily workplace.

Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us

Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money—the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink. In this provocative and persuasive book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction-at work, at school, and at home—is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world. Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does—and how that affects every aspect of life. Read along with us and let's discuss how these lessons apply to our multifamily teams and workplaces.

Swift Bunny Book Club: Radical Candor

Radical Candor is a simple idea: to be a good boss, you have to Care Personally at the same time that you Challenge Directly. When you challenge without caring its obnoxious aggression; when you care without challenging its ruinous empathy. When you do neither it’s manipulative insincerity. This simple framework can help you build better relationships at work, and fulfill your three key responsibilities as a leader: creating a culture of feedback (praise and criticism), building a cohesive team, and achieving results you’re all proud of. It is a new management philosophy of "caring personally while challenging directly." At its core, Radical Candor is guidance and feedback that's both kind and clear, specific and sincere. Read along with us as we dive into this wildly popular management book that has sparked a "management revolution." Let's explore the lessons, and their application to multifamily, together. Consider reading the book with your work team and bringing the whole group to our virtual Book Club meeting. We'd love to have you!

Give and Take: Why Helping Others Drives Our Success

Join us for our Book Club discussion of this thought-provoking book by organizational psychologist Adam Grant. Grant has been Wharton's top-rated professor for 7 straight years. He's a leading expert on how we can find more motivation and meaning in work, and live more generous and creative lives. For generations, we have focused on the individual drivers of success: passion, hard work, talent, and luck. But today, success is increasingly dependent on how we interact with others. It turns out that at work, most people operate as either takers, matchers, or givers. Whereas takers strive to get as much as possible from others and matchers aim to trade evenly, givers are the rare breed of people who contribute to others without expecting anything in return. Using his own pioneering research as Wharton's top-rated professor, Adam Grant shows that these styles have a surprising impact on success. Although some givers get exploited and burn out, the rest achieve extraordinary results across a wide range of industries. Give and Take highlights what effective networking, collaboration, influence, negotiation, and leadership skills have in common. Let's dive in and discuss how Grant's findings apply to multifamily life.

If Not You, Who? Cracking the Code of Employee Disengagement

Author Jill Christensen joined us for a lively discussion of her bestseller, If Not You, Who? Cracking the Code of Employee Disengagement. We chatted with Jill on what disengagement looks like in the workplace; why toxic and/or ineffective employees are allowed to remain on teams, and the damage that does to engagement levels and productivity; and what traits are admired most in multifamily leaders. Although this event is in the past, there's much still to be learned by watching the recording. And, consider reading the book with your team and hosting your own Book Club meeting around this title, using this recorded meeting as a value-added resource!
